Sotogrande is one of the largest privately owned luxury residential developments in Europe. Founded in 1962 by Filipino-American businessman Joseph McMicking it is located on the Costa del Sol in the Southern Spain. Inspired by some top resorts in California he was searching to create the same space and atmosphere of luxury and nature in Europe
At that moment Joseph McMicking worked for Ayla Corporation in the Philipines and together with his nephews, Jaime and Enrique Zobel, he found a perfect spot along the Mediterenian Coast in the Cadiz province where he has purchased several untouched fincas: Paniagua of 1,800 hectars, de la Campana (now Cortijo las Canas), Valderrama with it's equestrian centre, el Conchudo and finally, finca Sotogrande. On the 19th of September of 1962 the Financiera Sotogrande de Guadiaro SA was established and has marked the beginning of Sotogrande we have today.
As soon as planning was approved and construction premission granted Joseph McMicking started of creating the central place of Sotogrande that will attract and unite all residents and visitors in the enjoyment of life and it was Real Club de Golf golf course. To design it in 1964 Joseph McMicking has hired one of the best golf course designer of that time Robert Trent Jones.
The golf course became one of the best in Spain and has recieved Real title from the spanish Royal family. Over the years more golf course were created. 10 years later in 1974 Jospeh McMicking has again commissioned Robert Trent Jones to built second golf course in the Sotogrande Alto in the area of the Valderrama and this one became world-renoved one of the best courses in Europa
