Gibraltar narrowly missed out on automatic promotion to League C in the UEFA Nations League last night as San Marino upset the odds to beat Liechenstein 3-1 and pip Gibraltar to top spot by a single point.
Gibraltar thought they had done enough on Friday night by earning a point against San Marino - sending them 2 points clear (a game Gibraltar should've won if not for a 92nd minute San Marino penalty) meaning anything other than a win for San Marino last night would've promoted Gibraltar as group winners.
As it is Gibraltar will now enter the League C/D playoffs, so there is still a possibility of promotion.
There will be a draw for the playoffs which will include the two best 4th placed teams from League C and the 2 runners up from group D which is likely to be Malta, Latvia and Luxembourg.
This achievement is all the more impressive, considering Gibraltar's first UEFA recognised match was just 11 years ago and shows the commitment of coach Julio Cesar Ribas and his team.
We at Richardsons will be waiting with anticipation to see if Gibraltar can win promotion from a competitive league for the first time in our UEFA history!
Gibraltar's next match is a friendly against Moldova this evening at 6pm at Europa Point Stadium. Get your tickets here --> Official Ticketing | Gibraltar Football Association
